Upon his return from serving in the Korean War, Augustine “Gus” Garcia immediately entered and studied at the National School of Meat Cutting in Toledo, Ohio: he was awarded “The Butcher Certification.” Returning home to El Paso, he excitedly worked for several leading supermarkets. An unexpected occurrence led him to his future. He discovered he had been penalized for taking just one sick day off from the market. With his spouse by his side encouraging him to open his own shop, and with the help of Truman and Helen Palmer, CORONADO PRIME MEATS was born. Over the next 42 years, Gus and Coronado Prime Meats served and became pillars of the El Paso Community. In 2014, as Gus hung up his apron, another El Paso Native, Edward “Ed” Vaughn, purchased CORONADO PRIME MEATS. Ed brought with him renewed energy and quickly began improving the butcher shop. Ed embraces the “Favorites” El Pasoans have come to know and enjoy through the years, adding amazing new products and offerings.
